Year 4

Year 4 is a year of increasing independence.  Children are encouraged to develop strategies to find solutions for themselves, both within the curriculum and beyond, whether it being problem solving in a maths lesson or organising what they may need for a sporting fixture. The creative curriculum which includes History, Geography and Religious Education, encourages children to think more widely and deeply about the world around them.  The Autumn Term’s topic of Farm Boy examines farming at home and abroad, moving on to a study of the impact of war, both on the land and the people involved, with a focus on Michael Morpurgo’s moving book, War Horse.  Spring and Summer Term’s topics study the stories behind archaeological finds and the cause and result of extreme weather, as well as the effect of human life on the world we live in.

As well as the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, children learn French, Music, Reasoning and Physical Education from specialist teachers.  Children’s learning is supported and enhanced at every opportunity with a range of Computing equipment and skill development.

The extra-curricular activities are many and varied, ranging from chess to fencing and yoga to film-making.  Creativity is encouraged both within and outside the classroom:  children have the chance to perform in the whole School musical as well as the Christmas productions.  Forest School enables the children to work outside – whatever the weather – both independently or as part of a team, further developing their personal wellbeing as well as learning a variety of outdoor skills.  Year 4 is also the first year pupils can attend the popular residential activity weekend.
