Geography

The study of Geography stimulates an interest in and a sense of wonder about places. It helps us make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. Geography explains how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environments interact and how a diverse range of economies, societies and environments are interconnected.  Whether it is the threat of global warming, the consequences of our ageing population or controversial planning decisions in our local area, the media provide a constant reminder of the importance of ‘Geography’ in our lives.

Physical and Human Geography topics are balanced throughout the Key Stages creating both breadth and depth in a student’s knowledge and understanding. Fieldwork in both of these disciplines is of utmost importance, with this being a course requirement at GCSE. This will involve two days spent on a city enquiry and studying the processes, landforms and management of a coastal environment.

Students will also develop the use and application of a variety of geographical skills such as basic investigative, cartographic, graphical, applied ICT and statistical skills. Students will develop a critical awareness of the appropriateness and limitations of these different skills and resources.

Geography therefore encompasses many compatible attributes which support a student’s study of other subjects. Anyone who is interested in the space around them, however far or wide, can benefit from furthering their study in Geography.
