Enrichment Programme
Every week, in tutorial sessions and in one dedicated teaching period, Sixth Formers have PSHEE lessons to broaden their curriculum and allow them to consider and discuss issues relating to their personal and social development. A broad range of topics is covered, aiming to give education for life. Sessions include politics, current affairs, philosophy, citizenship, general science, sociology, law, cultural studies and environmental studies. There is a detailed programme of study skills to enable individuals to maximise their personal performance. Health issues such as drug and alcohol awareness and sexual health are discussed. Speakers are often invited to these sessions to offer students a broader perspective. A programme of careers is covered during these sessions.
Lower Sixth Formers will have a designated Careers Guidance lesson on their timetables. This will help them to identify their core skills and strengths and how to match them up with their interests. Although specific careers will be discussed, the emphasis will be more on how to build and evidence a portfolio of skills that will equip students to engage with an ever-changing world of work.
In the Upper Sixth, the emphasis will be more strongly on UCAS support and guidance, although careers guidance will also be available to students on a one-to-one basis.
All students are also expected to undertake an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) as part of their Sixth Form studies. This will give them an opportunity to pursue areas of academic interest to them above and beyond the curriculum. EPQs are well regarded by universities, carry UCAS points (equivalent to an AS Level) and often lead to students being made preferential UCAS offers. The Peterborough School is committed to encouraging Sixth Form students to take an active role within the School through various roles of responsibility and, out in the wider community. Volunteering helps pupils to develop leadership, organisational and communication skills in preparation for their opportunities and challenges ahead. It also provides students with an important additional element to their CVs and UCAS applications. All students in the Sixth Form are expected to take part in our Volunteering Programme, which is accredited through the V-Inspired organisation.
